We’re here to help you reach your full potential

If you are struggling with opioid use, it’s important to know that support is available for you. We can help you stay safe, cut down, or stop altogether. Our team of doctors, nurses, and experienced Horizon workers will create a plan to help you reach your goals, offering you different options and you can choose what works best for you.

What are opioids?

Opioids are natural or synthetic drugs that act on opioid receptors in the brain and body to relieve pain. Opioids and opiates can become addictive because they not only dull pain but can also produce a sense of euphoria in some people.

Heroin

Heroin is a powerful opioid derived from morphine, a natural substance that is made from the opium poppy. Heroin is taken by smoking, snorting and injecting, delivering a rapid and intense effect which can be highly addictive.

Morphine

Morphine is a strong prescription painkiller, derived from opium, that works in the brain and spinal cord to relieve severe pain. Because it's highly potent, it is closely controlled due to the risk of addiction and series side effects like breathing problems.

Codeine

Codeine is usually prescribed by a doctor to treat pain when over-the-counter medications aren't effective. It's usually taken orally, either as a tablet or a syrup. While codeine can be helpful, it's important to be aware that it can be addictive. If taken for a long time, there's a risk of developing a tolerance, meaning you need higher doses to feel the same relief.

Other opioids

There are many types of opioids beyond the commonly known ones like morphine and codeine. These include medications such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl and methadone, which are often prescribed for managing severe pain but do carry risks of dependence. The Horizons team can provide guidance and care to ensure you use these medications safely.

Do you need urgent support?

If there is an immediate risk to life - such as a suspected drug overdose, life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, or someone has tried to or is about to end their life - call 999 for urgent support.

What support is available?

All our services are confidential, free, and open to everyone in Bristol. Our friendly Horizons team can walk you through the support options available for your opioid use, making it easy for you to choose what’s best for you.

  • Advice and resources to reduce harm

We understand that you may need, or choose, to continue using opioids while receiving support. Not everyone aims to stop using them, and that’s okay. Our priority is to keep you as safe as possible with our harm reduction support, offering practical advice to minimise risks, such as safe usage practices and overdose prevention.

  • One-to-one Support

If you would prefer a more personalised approach, you can receive support directly with a member of the Horizons team. They'll often have lived experience of what you're going through, offering a confidential and safe space to confide in without any fear of judgement.

  • Workshops

Our workshops are a great starting point for those considering support for their drug use. They offer a welcoming space where our team offers valuable insights and practical advice, helping you make informed decisions with confidence.

  • Clinical intervention

If it is helpful to treat your specific needs, our clinical experts may prescribe you opiate substitute medication, such as methadone or buprenorphine. You, your Horizons worker, and the clinical team will work together to design a medication plan in line with your goals.

  • Rehab or detox

The Horizons team can support you in accessing opiate rehabilitation or detox services, either at home or at a residential facility. During this process, you'll receive support to manage withdrawal symptoms and to make positive changes in your daily life.

Where can I access support?

We understand that everyone is unique and that’s why we believe in offering flexible options, so you can choose what works best for you when it comes to accessing support. No matter your preference, you’ll find it easy to obtain the resources, information and treatment you need.
