We’re here to help you reach your full potential

Bristol has many different universities and is a great place to study. We offer specialist support for students in Bristol who are concerned that their drug or alcohol use is affecting them.

What support is available?

The University of Bristol adopts a harm reduction approach to student drug use. They understand that some students may choose to use alcohol and other drugs, and they believe that offering advice and support can enhance the safety and wellbeing of the student community.

University of Bristol

At Horizons, we've partnered with The University of Bristol, offering specialist support for students. You can be open with us about your alcohol or drug use without worrying about getting into trouble.

How to access our support

All our services are confidential and free to use, and open to all people in Bristol. We’ll guide you through the available support options, making it simple and straightforward for you to choose what’s best for you.

As part of our partnership, we offer specialist support for students at UoB every Thursday. You are also more than welcome to visit Horizons at one of our local hubs throughout the city.

Advice to reduce harm

Some people may choose to continue using alcohol or drugs while seeking support from Horizons. Not everyone aims to stop altogether, so we offer harm reduction resources to help you stay safe.

One-to-one support

Our team often have lived experience of what you’re going through and will be understanding no matter your situation. They’re a great person to confide in, offering a confidential and safe space for you to discuss your needs with.

Friends and family support

If someone you care about is struggling with their substance use, you may need some extra support too. We provide a dedicated friends and family service, giving you access to education, resources, and coping strategies when you are concerned about how best to look out for someone.

Frequently asked questions

We understand you may have questions about our support. We've answered some of the most frequently asked questions to help provide some guidance.

Do I have to pay to use the service?

No! Our drug and alcohol support services are completely free of charge.

Will anyone find out I am using your service?

All your information is kept safe and not shared outside of our organisation without your explicit permission. We are only required to share information with other professionals if there is a serious risk to you or someone else.

I know someone who might have a problem. Can I refer them?

It’s brilliant that you can see how support could benefit the person – but they must be aware of the referral. You can accompany the person to support them attending. We also understand that substance use can affect friends and family, so we offer a dedicated service for the family, friends, and carers of the people we support.

Still have questions?
